Special Exhibition

Uragami collection HOKUSAI Manga:Marvelous Eye, Marvelous Drawing

KATSUSHIKA HOKUSAI (1760 -1849) is a world-famous Ukiyoe artist. Among his masterpieces, 'HOKUSAI Manga (HOKUSAI sketch)' is known as a masterpiece along with "Fugaku Sanjyu-rokkei(36 Views of Mt. Fuji)". It was painted as a picture model for his disciples and when its first edition was published in 1814 (Bunka 11), it became extremely popular with the common people and was repeatedly published until 1878 (Meiji 11) after HOKUSAI's death. Its sophisticated brushwork, dynamic composition, and humorous depiction of people's features and momentary movements reveal, eloquently, HOKUSAI's extraordinary power of drawing and vision, which he called "an old man crazy about painting" continued to draw until he was 90 years old. In this exhibition, we will introduce about 200 more selected items from the collection of Mr. Mitsuru Uragami, who boasts the world's highest quality and quantity.
